All year moisturiser: Emolene

A moisturiser is the most important part of your skincare regime. I have spent many years and a little too much money to search for a good moisturiser for my skin – with more misses than hits. A friend of mine suggested this cream a few years back and I finally hit gold. It is now a regular part of my skincare routine. So, let me introduce my moisturiser love – Emolene

emolene

How to Apply

For oily skin, take a pea sized amount for your entire face and gently rub it in. For dry skin you can take slightly more for your face.

I sometimes mix a little of Cosrx Snail Serum Or Minimalist Squalene with Emolene to give my skin a added hydration boost.

Ingredient List

Lecithin, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Carbomer 934, Glycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Capric Acid Triglyceride, Dimethicone, Squalene, Polyoxyl 40 Stearate, Stearic Acid, Glycol Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Myristyl Myristate, C-10-30 Carboxylic Acid Sterol Ester, Butylated Hydroxy Anisole, Toluene, Water, EDTA

The stars:
1. Glycerine – A humectant, which helps skin stay hydrated
2. Lecithin – Softens and soothes the skin
3. Squalene – Skin identical moisturiser

The villains:
1. Butylated Hydroxy Anisole – It’s a synthetic antioxidant that’s used as a preservative. Was found to be potentially carcinogenic in animals when given in high doses (so you are mostly safe since it is used in a very low dose)
2. Myristyl Myristate – Highly comedogenic(5) – If you are acne prone with very sensitive skin then you should avoid products with this ingredient
3. Cetyl Alcohol – A non drying alcohol, which acts as a emollient.

It also has propylene glycol & urea as its main ingredients. Propylene glycol is a permeation/penetration enhancer – which is why if you are using any actives in your skincare (AHA, BHA, retinoids etc) use only a pea size amount of Emolene – to avoid any sensitivity.

Yes, emolene does have ingredients which could potentially break one out, but it surprisingly suited me. I reach out for this occasionally, and I’m yet to break out even once from using this.

Results

Even though Emolene has an extremely hit or miss ingredient list, it somehow worked for me. It is lightweight and does not have a fragrance. Glides smoothly (almost like a gel) on the skin and gets absorbed really fast. My skin feels hydrated and does not feel greasy. I have sensitive skin and I’m using this since the past year – and so far so good – no breakouts yet.

And it does help that it is easy on the pocket.

Suggestions

Please do a patch test before starting to apply this on your skin. For patch test, take a pea sized amount and lightly apply either your elbow or your chin (if you are sure that it won’t cause you a breakout). Leave it on for a few hours (at least 5-6 hours), and in case it doesn’t leave you a rash, you can continue using this.

Though the ingredients can be a hit or miss – This worked for my sensitive skin. And just for that Emolene will always be a part of my skincare routine.
